FAQ - 💬
❓ How do you care for a Regal Pelargonium?
👉 Regal Pelargoniums like to be in a light but sheltered place. The light will encourage the plant to grow vivid, colourful flowers. A sheltered place is necessary to protect the flowers from rain. It's best to water the Regal Pelargonium twice per week, straight onto the soil, not on the plant itself.
❓ Is a regal geranium an annual or perennial?
👉 Click Play to Learn How to Grow Annual Geraniums
Botanical Name | Pelargonium spp. and hybrids |
---|---|
Common Name | Annual geranium, zonal geranium, regal geranium, ivy-leaved geranium |
Plant Type | Herbaceous perennial flower, usually grown as an annual |
Mature Size | 5-36 in. tall, depending on variety |
❓ How do you overwinter a Regal Pelargonium?
👉 Overwintering
- In late summer, take softwood cuttings (you can discard the old woody plants at the end of the season)
- Once the cuttings have rooted, overwinter them in trays of compost kept on a well-lit indoor windowsill.
- Water the trays only sparingly in winter, allowing the compost to dry out between waterings.
❓ What is the difference between a geranium and a Pelargonium?
👉 The main difference between Pelargonium and Geranium is the shape of their flowers; the two upper petals of Pelargonium flowers are different from the three lower petals, whereas the five petals of Geranium flowers are identical. Pelargonium and Geranium are two plants of the same family: family Geraniaceae.
❓ Do regal geraniums bloom all summer?
👉 Growing regal geranium: Regal pelargoniums like mild weather and sunny days to perform their best. Where nights do not go above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, they will continue blooming all summer. In warmer areas, they will take a midsummer hiatus until cooler nights prevail in the fall.
❓ How do you prune Regal geraniums?
👉 Use a pair of reliable shears to trim back perennial geraniums to 2 or 3 inches above the soil, cutting at nodes or new growth points when possible. Remove any leaves or additional flowers that remain. You'll end up with a fairly unattractive grouping of thick stems.
❓ Will geraniums come back year after year?
👉 True hardy geraniums are perennials that come back each year, while pelargoniums die in the winter and are frequently treated like annuals, re-planted each year.
❓ How many years do geraniums last?
👉 The average life expectancy of a geranium is about two years, and although they will last much longer than that, they tend to get woody and the blooms diminish. Luckily, propagation is easy with geraniums. Simply take four-inch stem tip cuttings with at least two pairs of healthy leaves.
❓ Can I keep pelargoniums over the winter?
👉 Pelargoniums don't have a dormant period, so the easiest way to keep them going through the winter is to dig them up and keep them as indoor houseplants on sunny windowsills.
❓ Can you leave geraniums in pots over winter?
👉 Often geraniums are grown in containers, and this is a great way to grow them if you are looking to overwinter them. If your geraniums are already in pots, in fall, before the frost arrives, these pots can simply be moved under cover into a light, airy and frost-free place such as a greenhouse or conservatory.
❓ How long do pelargoniums live for?
👉 The average life expectancy of a geranium is about two years, and although they will last much longer than that, they tend to get woody and the blooms diminish. Luckily, propagation is easy with geraniums. Simply take four-inch stem tip cuttings with at least two pairs of healthy leaves.
👉 Noted for the beauty of its flowers, award-winning Pelargonium 'Fareham' (Regal Pelargonium) is a compact, evergreen perennial with attractive, broad, lobed leaves. From late spring to frost, clusters of very large, brilliant mauve-pink flowers, adorned with lilac picotee edges, are nicely set off by the foliage.
👉 We do not sell these plants. Pelargonium Regal hybrids have bushy habit and can be perennials or small shrubs. They are grown for the clusters of large brightly coloured flowers during spring and summer. The beautiful flowers vary in shape, some look rather like azalea with frilled petals whilst others are similar to pansies.
👉 Most of them have green foliage, but a few have variegated white and green leaves. The blooms on regal pelargoniums are frequently very eye-catching with several florets grouped into a large umbel, making the umbel look like a bouquet on a single flower stem. A plant may have many umbels at one time. It is the belle of the ball wherever it
👉 The first species of Pelargonium known to be cultivated was P. triste, a native of South Africa. It was probably brought to the Botanical Garden in Leiden before 1600 on ships which had stopped at the Cape of Good Hope. In 1631, the English gardener John Tradescant the elder bought seeds from Rene Morin in Paris and introduced the plant to England.
